In-Library Browsing closed due to increase of positive Covid cases

 

The town’s COVID positivity level is in the “Red’ with an increase in the number of cases. Out of an abundance of caution, and based on the guidance of the Board of Health, the Board of Trustees voted to close the library to in-library browsing, effective Wednesday, December 23, 2020, until further notice. Curbside pickup will still be available.

Patrons may call or email to make appointments for curbside pickup. Our other services such as photocopying, faxing, and notary service will be available curbside only.

Curbside Pickup to begin Tuesday, June 2

The Merrick Public Library in Brookfield will reopen on Tuesday, June 2, 2020, with curbside pickup only. Patrons may request library materials in a number of ways.

Online: Log into your C/W Mars account (cwmars.org) and choose “Brookfield Merrick Public Library” on the drop-down list. You can also use the C/W Mars app to do this.

Scheduled pickup times will be Tuesday and Thursday 3:00 to 7:00 p.m., Wednesday and Friday noon to 4:00 p.m. When your items are ready for pickup we will call or email you to schedule a time and day. Items will be brought outside. During pickups please social distance to 6 feet and wear masks if other people are also picking up. The foyer will be used for pickups during rainy weather, with only one person/family in the foyer at a time.

You may return items to the library. Please use the drop box. Returned materials will be quarantined for 3 days, then cleaned and checked in per CDC guidelines. We are not accepting book donations at this time.

Until the Massachusetts Library System (MLS) interlibrary loan program starts up again, we will be circulating only library materials from the Brookfield library, so there will be a limit of ten items per library card.

The library will be closed Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

         The Board of Trustees, Brookfield have voted on Tuesday, April 7, 2020 to keep the Merrick Public Library closed until further notice and until Governor Baker declares it's safe to reopen public buildings.

Statement from MBLC Chair, Roland Ochsenbein

While the MBLC respects local boards of trustees and their governance over local library operations, in this extraordinary time, the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners (MBLC), as a Commission appointed by the Governor of the Commonwealth, strongly recommends that all libraries in the Commonwealth that are still open to the public be closed in response to the COVID-19 crisis in order to safeguard the health of all library patrons and staff and to aid in the overall national goal of containment.

The MBLC also urges all governing bodies and institutions with libraries that are closed to the public to continue to pay all library staff for the duration of the closure period. In addition, the MBLC recommends that staff members not be docked for sick, vacation, or personal days as a result of stay-at-home directives intended to protect them and their patrons and to serve the greater good.

Many libraries are successfully working with their local board of trustees and officials to address the COVID-19 crisis.  However, increasing concerns from the library community prompt the MBLC to issue the following additional recommendations:

1. Promote access to digital resources. All statewide resources are available on mass.gov/libraries
2. Discontinue curbside delivery as it may put both staff and patrons at risk.
3. In libraries that are closed to the public but open to staff, library directors should work with their local trustees and public health organization to determine safe staffing levels.
4. Libraries should remain closed until at least April 5 and possibly longer if Governor Baker's office or the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) provide guidance recommending public spaces remain closed for a longer period.
5. Libraries serving critical needs for special populations, such as libraries for the blind and print disabled, should modify these recommendations as needed.

The 370 public libraries and the numerous academic, school, and special libraries in Massachusetts are backbones of their communities. We know that this will be hard for the impacted communities, but it is in line with the steps that have already been taken by schools and other important community services.

The Commissioners and the entire staff at the MBLC are working hard to determine the way forward for library services, so very important to every community, while also looking out for the safety and health of all librarians and residents in the Commonwealth.

MBLC and MLS are continuing to update our resource guide. We encourage you to monitor it and to reach out directly to me or one of the staff members at MBLC with any questions or concerns you may have.

The Central Mass Regional Public Health Alliance is asking public libraries to discontinue the sharing of all materials to limit the spread of COVID-19.  Merrick Public Library, Brookfield will no longer provide curbside pick-up.  

Library to CLOSE effective Tuesday, March 17, 2020

The Merrick Public Library, Brookfield will close effective Tuesday, March 17, 2020 for an indefinite period of time. The Board of Trustees and library staff hope to open, April 7, 2020. 

The staff will provide curbside pick-ups for our patrons, please call 508-867-6339 or email brookfieldcovid19@gmail.com.  This week Tuesday, March 17, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. and Thursday, March 19 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.  We would prefer all patrons keep your materials on loan until we re-open.

•            All events, and programs are at this time either cancelled or postponed.
•        The library will waive overdue fines for our library patrons through May 1st.
•            During this time, we are expanding automatic renewals and allowing people to keep their books and other materials for 15 weeks. 
•           Use of online library services will not be suspended for patrons during this period. A free Boston ecard is available through www.bpl.org/general/circulation/ecards.htm
•          We foresee no interruption in our digital services, which will remain on line for cardholders to enjoy remotely.
•          The Merrick Public Library wifi is always available 24 hours 7 days a week.

·         We are committed to the health, safety, and well-being of our visitors and staff. We will continue to closely monitor the developing Coronavirus situation. Further updates to our operating hours will be announced through this website, and on our social media platforms.

Delivery will run today, Monday, March 16, 2020, dropping off items as scheduled, but will then hiatus for at least the rest of the week, to March 20. No bins will be picked up.  We will keep you updated on the Delivery System.
