Summer Reading FUN 2014!

More than 70 children took part in the Merrick Public Library’s summer reading program, and we would like to thank everyone who participated, and everyone who helped make it possible.  Thank you to the Friends of the Library for sponsoring our raffle prizes and smoothie party, and the Brookfield Cultural Council for sponsoring our two presentations, What a Scientist Looks Like and Einstein’s Favorite Fairy Tales.  Thank you to the following for donating raffle prizes:  Klem’s; Smokestack Lightning, Inc.; Southwick Zoo; McDonalds; and the Big E.  Thank you to Polar Beverages for donating 80 bottles of diet cola, and CVS for donating $25 toward the purchase of Mentos, for our explosive experiment.  And a special thank you to the Union 61 Coordinated Family & Community Grant in collaboration with Scholastic Literacy Partnership for helping provide a free book for each summer reading participant.  They have been a strong community partner for the past 6 years, and they provide books to families to create home libraries and encourage reading to your child every day.

Fizz, Boom Read! Summer Reading for all!

Summer Reading Events at the Merrick Public Library in Brookfield.

The summer reading program is open to all ages and has a science theme this year:  “Fizz, Boom, Read!”  Starting July 8, sign up any time at the front desk to receive a book log.  Raffle tickets will be awarded for books read, with lots of great prizes to try for.  Bonus raffle tickets will be awarded to program attendees.

To “blast off” our program, Tuesday, July 15, 2014, from 4 to 5 p.m.:  Dr. Loree Burns will present “What Does a Scientist Look Like?” Dr. Burns is the author of several non-fiction books for kids, including Tracking Trash: Flotsam, Jetsam, and the Science of Ocean Motion; The Hive Detectives: Chronicle of a Honey Bee Catastrophe; and Citizen Scientists: Be a Part of Scientific Discovery from Your Own Backyard.  Books will be available for purchase and signing after the presentation.

Our program finale is Thursday, August 14, 2014, from 4 to 5 p.m.:  Mary Jo Maichack will present “Albert Einstein’s Favorite Fairy Tales.” Ms. Maichack is a national award-winning minstrel storyteller, and her presentation will include tales from the Brothers Grimm, fables by scientist Leonardo da Vinci, an interactive “Atomic Shuffle,” and songs about science.

Following Ms. Maichack’s presentation, the Friends of Merrick Public Library will host a smoothie party where the raffle winners will be announced.  Stay tuned for more “explosive” details of party events.

“Fizz, Boom, Read!” is sponsored by the Merrick Public Library, the Massachusetts Library System, the Boston Bruins, and the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners. The two event programs are supported in part by a grant from the Brookfield Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency.
