Horizon Wings, February vacation! Tuesday, February 18, 2:00 p.m. FREE! Friends of the Merrick Public Library

Horizon Wings
Raptor Rehabilitation and Education
"The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged
by the way its animals are treated." – Gandhi
Horizon Wings was formed in 2001 by Mary-Beth Kaeser as a 501C3 non-profit Wildlife Rehabilitation Center specializing in Birds of Prey located in Ashford, CT.   Horizon Wings has several raptors that cannot be released back into the wild due to their injuries.  Fortunately we are able to keep these birds at our center and, with a special permit, use them for educational programs.

Bird Brains

Did you know that crows are capable of recognizing and remembering individual faces and can teach their children which individuals to avoid? Far from being “hard-wired” as previously thought, recent research proves that birds actually possess sophisticated cognitive abilities. Indeed, responding to changing conditions by changing the way they act, is often crucial to their survival. Join us as we compare and contrast the fascinating qualities of avian intelligence among four different species of birds: an American Crow, a Peregrine Falcon, an owl, and a parrot.

Thursday, August 1, at 6:00 p.m. CHALLENGER: Soaring With Christa™ Who is America's favorite teacher? Ask anyone about Christa McAuliffe and they will tell you exactly where they were when the Challenger shuttle launched; however, few people understand who Mrs. McAuliffe really was. America's Teacher in Space was an educational pioneer and her goals and accomplishments are explored in this multi-media performance experience, which debuted in 2016 in honor of the 30th anniversary of the Challenger launch.  At the Merrick Public Library.
